HR specialists, not solicitors. If you need a solicitor, they’ll tell you.
The 20-person rule
Not sure the rules apply to you?
Proposing 20 or more redundancies at one site within 90 days triggers collective consultation, however small the business. For a firm of 50 to 249 people, closing one site or team can cross that line. Miss it and the cost can dwarf the savings you were making.
Under 20? JOSS tells you that too. There's no collective duty, but individual consultation and fair selection still apply. From 1 January 2027, employees with 6 months' service can claim unfair dismissal.
